As many of you know, I teach wedding photography alongside shooting real weddings.  It’s something I really enjoy doing, meeting newcomers to the industry and hopefully providing them with a helping hand into a career that I absolutely love.  I don’t usually blog images taken on training courses with models as they’re not ‘real’ so to speak, but on a course a couple of weeks ago, we had some amazing golden late afternoon sun, and I loved some of the shots I was able to grab – hope you like….

That was a great day. Amazing weather considering the day before was one continuous downpour. Cold but great light!

Mike – your photography is absolutely stunning. I’m very impressed. Do you have any guidance for using flare creatively? Is it necessary to stop down the aperture to get good results?

Hi David, and thanks. Using a small aperture like f22 is great if you want a starburst look to the sun, but the best thing you can do for flare is to partially hide the sun behind something in the frame to reduce it’s power. Shooting through a tree, or hiding it behind the edge of a building will really help.

Thanks very much Mike. I shall get out and practise and see if I can incorporate the occasional flare shot into my repertoire this year.

In 2010 I was amazed and thankful to collect the UK top wedding photographer prize from the UKWPA, but my proudest accolade is becoming the most awarded British photographer on the global ‘FEARLESS Photographers’ website, with 18 awards over the last two years. It's an amazing website that rewards some of the best wedding photographers around the world and motivates me to shoot creatively.
